Thermo-Activated Adhesive Hernia Patch

Problem

Currently, ventral hernias are surgically closed with sutures with bridging mesh over the sutured line. This helps to keep the intraabdominal organs in place and keeps the site of hernia repair from reopening. Unfortunately, high amounts of tension can occur on the suture line, which can lead to dehiscence, ischemia, and cutting of underlying fascia.

Solution

To help relieve tension form the suture line, I plan to design a thermo-activated adhesive patch. The patch will also be a reinforcement to the mesh or can be used as a substitute for the mesh, to help prevent dehiscence.
