WasteNot

Brown University Design Studio

Work with a group to design a diegetic prototype that exists in a near future scenario

Background: WasteNot is a container used to aid the user with the prevention of wasting food. After purchasing food, the customer voices the date the food was purchased, the number of servings, and the type of food through the button on the top of the container. The container is also is connected to an app.

Design 1

  • Interface shows the number of servings, expiration date, and food name.

  • Band is used to indicate if the food is good (green) or bad (red). The band also has a magnetic field, so as the food goes bad the container moves closer to the front of the refrigerator.

Design 2

  • Interface was changed to better display the expiration date and servings

  • A button was added to allow the user to input the information with their voice

  • A change to indicate if the food is good or bad was made by making the food container light up green, yellow, or red; depending on the quality of the food

  • An app was developed to better the experience for the user

Final Design

  • Interface was further designed to allow the user to read the information easier

  • Minimal information is shown when the container is at rest, and when the container is picked up more information is displayed

  • Button was moved to a more natural area
